Driven to Kill: 25 Infamous Getaway Cars

Whitey Bulger

Whitey Bulger was always in the Boston news during the late 1970s through the 1990s, until he finally went underground in 1994. His crimes were so horrifying that he had a book and movie written about him, titled “Black Mass.” Bulger finally was captured in 2011, but his trusty 1975 Chevrolet Malibu made regular appearances as his getaway car.

This was not a regular Malibu, however. Since he knew it would be used as a getaway vehicle and he had resources at his disposal, Bulger altered the car so it would release either an oil slick or a smokescreen to keep pursuers away—just like the movies. This method served him well, as Bulger lived on the run for 16 years before his capture in Santa Monica.
